Starting May 7, 2025, travellers in the United States must present a Real ID-compliant driver’s licence or another approved form of identification to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities.

This long-anticipated change, initiated under the 2005 Real ID Act, seeks to enhance security and streamline identity verification nationwide.

Real ID is not just an ordinary licence upgrade – it features enhanced security standards.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notes that compliant licences bear a distinctive star in the upper-right corner, with designs varying by state. California, for example, incorporates a bear symbol alongside the star, while Maine opts for a state outline.

How to check if you have a Real ID

Wondering if your current driver’s licence qualifies? Look for the star or emblem indicating compliance. If it’s missing, you’ll need to upgrade at your local licensing office.

How to apply for a Real ID

Applying for a Real ID involves presenting a set of official documents, including proof of identity (e.g., a passport or birth certificate), Social Security number, and two documents confirming your current address (such as utility bills). Originals or certified copies are mandatory, as photocopies and digital versions are not accepted.

Applicants must visit their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent agency to complete the process. While fees vary slightly by state, obtaining a Real ID typically costs the same as renewing a standard licence.

After applying, you’ll receive a temporary paper ID while your Real ID card arrives by mail, usually within three to four weeks.

Alternatives to Real ID

Travellers who choose not to obtain a Real ID have other TSA-approved options for domestic flights. These include:

  • US passports
  • Trusted traveller programme cards (e.g., Global Entry, NEXUS)
  • Department of Defense IDs
  • Federally recognised tribal photo IDs
  • Enhanced driver’s licences issued by certain states, including New York and Michigan
  • For international travellers, a passport remains essential.

Miss the Deadline? Here’s what happens

From May 7, 2025, non-compliant IDs will no longer be accepted at airport security checkpoints. Without a Real ID or alternative approved identification, US adults will be unable to board domestic flights. However, regular driver’s licences will still serve for driving, purchasing alcohol, and other non-federal uses.
